The guest is President Saddam Hussein
Scenario
An unexpected visitor knocks on his door, a simple Iraqi farmer. A guest who had to hide from family, friends and 150,000 American soldiers. Hiding Saddam Hussein was created by Norwegian filmmaker Halcaut Mustafa, who spent 12 years making the film about the man who hid former Iraqi president and dictator Saddam Hussein. In 2003, US forces invaded Iraq leading to the overthrow of Saddam Hussein’s regime.
The former president had to flee
On the way he stopped at farmers. He lives in a small village in Iraq with his pregnant wife and three children when life turns upside down. Ala Namuk, a visiting farmer, must hide from family, friends, and 150,000 American soldiers on the hunt. A $25 million liability on his head.
But after winning his trust, a new problem arose
Here he digs a hole for the dictator – a hole in which he will be found 235 days later. First, the filmmaker had to spend a lot of time getting to know Alaa. It took more than three years to gain his trust. The film director couldn’t find a safe place for both of them in the Middle East, so he secretly brought him to Norway.
But it also had its price
It was the first time we could talk without stress and danger. In 235 days, the farmer became Saddam’s bodyguard, cook, driver, hairdresser, mentor and friend. When the former Iraqi president was discovered by the Americans, Alaa was also arrested and brought to the dreaded Abu Ghraib, where he was tortured. Amazing work behind this documentary where Ala Farmer tells his story and why he got it.
Through all the troubles when he hides the most wanted man on earth
An important and impressive piece of work, and well done from a great filmmaker.
