Amazon’s original proposal for the television rights to JRR
Scenario
An epic drama set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord of the Rings' follows a group of characters, familiar and new, as they face the long-feared re-emergence of evil in Middle-earth.. "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" cast and multiple actors who completely transformed for their roles.. Tolkien’s 'Hobbit' and 'Lord of the Rings' novel was to make the series a new adaptation of the latter (an actual retelling of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) and The Lord of the Rings : The Return of the King (2003)), but the Tolkien estate rejected this proposal.

Amazon eventually acquired the rights on the condition that the series differed from Peter Jackson’s earlier adaptations and did not contradict anything Tolkien had previously written. Early ideas that were proposed included prequels featuring characters such as Aragorn, Gimli and Gandalf, but the showrunners preferred to focus on important untold events from the novels' lore, not simple side stories, so they agreed with the studio that the series would take place over the course of the books' Another era. Since they did not have the rights to Tolkien’s 'The Silmarillion', 'Unfinished Tales' and 'History of Middle-earth' (who explores the First and Second Ages), checked the Lord of the Rings novels and supplements for passages and references to the Second Age in which to place their story. The estate and several Tolkien lore experts (including grandson and novelist Simon Tolkien) were consulted about the inclusion of new characters and plot elements..

The opening title is a musical sequence of matter forming different forms, based on the "Music of the Ainur" creation myth by J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Silmarillion”.. With all the expensive sets, CGI trees, immersive worlds and endless lands, this show is like being in a history class, specialty: Middle Earth. What’s happening can be interesting, but what we need is emotion, characters interacting, and story development.
The fantasy elements are more like Narnia than Tolkien
What we get is actors reciting things about what they’re going to do or what they should do and it’s absolutely boring. Gone is the gritty, earthy, sensual aesthetic of Peter Jackson, and what we get are endless screensavers of painted majestic cities populated by elven Sims. Everything is so plastic, lush and shiny, I feel like I’m watching a commercial for Shire Airlines. Because money can’t buy personality, and the Ring of Power clearly lacks it.
So we’re left with only the most expensive Enya music video
Not to blame the actors, but they all look like extras waiting for the real thing. Galadriel is a good character, but she can’t carry this show on her pointy ears. That’s what I feared the most: snooping through all the remaining pages of Tolkien’s work and focusing only on world-building in the play-runners forgot the essentials, creating a believable key protagonist to inhabit those episodes.
